2_Exploring improvements in fisheries and aquaculture
We aim to apply individual-based modeling approaches to improve oyster yield in aquaculture and to inform sustainable harvesting strategies from naturally recruiting populations. Such models have been developed in plant sciences and can be transferred to the context of benthic macrofauna. Elements of the project which might be developed include the impacts of climate change, existing and emerging diseases, and invasive species on oyster production in different European regions. We seek additional partners from any country with interests in oyster aquaculture, especially the use of land-based spatting ponds, or wild harvesting of oysters.
University College Cork is a research university based in the Republic of Ireland. Our group can provide expertise in mathematical modeling (Dr Markus Eichhorn), ecology of marine invertebrates (Dr Ruth Ramsay) and shellfish health (Dr Sharon Lynch), in addition to local industrial partners.
