2_Exploring improvements in fisheries and aquaculture
The idea would be to create a food supplement with cultivated mushrooms, which will serve as a complement in the feeding of fish to improve productivity.
There are numerous studies that confirm that the consumption of fungi or extracts of them, by fish, decreases their mortality, increases the immune response to diseases and improves the growth rate of fish.
These studies also grant other benefits to the introduction of fungi into the fish diet, such as increased antioxidant activity, increased digestive enzymatic activity, decreased degradation of astaxanthin in the muscle of the fish during storage, improved the growth performance, the lipid content and the parameters of food utilization.
The Professional Association of Substrate and Mushroom Producers ASOCHAMP is a non-lucrative association, funded in 1988, gathering most mushroom growers, compost plants and related industries in three of the most productive regions in Spain. From 2003 onwards ASOCHAMP establish their headquarters in The Mushroom Technological Center in La Rioja, which has been ceded by the goverment to the association in order to provide it with an energising and developing tool.
Currently it is the only center in Spain that has the capacity to carry out the entire production chain of Agaricus bisporus and other cultivated mushrooms, been able to grow them from spawn production to cultivation for which it has the following infrastructure:
Facilities: On a plot of 3,500 square meters, the Mushroom Technology Research Center consists of:
-Two pilot cultivation units fully equipped and air conditioned, equipped with Dutch type shelves which allow conducting full-scale tests.
-Three growing rooms rectangular provided with climate control for testing on an experimental scale mushroom and exotic mushrooms.
-Mushroom compost pilot plant equipped with two small scale chambers, one for pasteurization and other for fermentation tests intended for composting tests.
-Exotic mushroom production pilot plant, prepared for the preparation of the substrate, sterilization, inoculation and incubation of different varieties of exotic mushrooms.
-Six small rooms for experimental trials on exotic mushrooms growing.
-A traditional greenhouse for mushroom production.
All these rooms and chambers are controlled through computer systems and make possible the conducting of different research projects and experiments as well as training courses for farmers.
The laboratory is divided into 3 different departments (Physic-chemical laboratory, Spectroscopy laboratory and microbiology laboratory) with a double purpose, the conducting of R & D projects and the analytical service for the Professional Association Members, mainly for the composting plants.
The center has a DNA Ultrasequencing system (MiSeq, Illumina) and all the equipments necessary for the exposed work packages realization on the memory (incubators, autoclaves, centrifuges, microplate readers, spectrophotometers, biosafety cabinets, laminar flow booths, ultrafreezers, thermocyclers, electrophoresis equipment, PCR, etc.).
For the mushrooms cultivation ASOCHAMP-CTICH has a pilot plant to produce pasteurized substrate and growing rooms with automatic clima conditions control.
